Hello,
I tried to install this plugin few times but every time I get this error when I try to activate it through the admin zone :
Fatal error: Cannot redeclare wassup_install() (previously declared in /---THE-PATH---/blog/wp-content/plugins/wassup/wassup.php:58) in /---THE-PATH---/blog/wp-content/plugins/wassup/wassup.php on line 57
I don't understand at all because I didn't change anything and it's special that I'm the only one to get this error...

What is the Wordpress version?

Is it possible that you have 2 copies of WassUp installed on your blog? Your error may indicate that another version of WassUp is already activated. [WassUp is like Jet Li...there can be only "the one". :)]

No I don't think I have 2 versions of WassUp... I just copied the directory at the correct place and try to activate so I don't see how I could have two versions. I know a bit about PHP and I checked the file : I don't see what I could do wrong.
I have to say that I changed the name of the wp-admin directory. Could it be the problem ?

I don't want that the users register their account and I did it because it should be more secure. The people who would like to hack it should firstly find the directory and can't use the traditional and well-known wp-admin/ directory (since it's the same for all the WordPress blogs). It works with all the plugins, themes, etc. so I don't think this can be a problem... ?

did you ever try to install WassUp with a "standard" wp-admin directory on your blogs? I think that could be a problem for it. And please if you can, there are the new beta version (still in developing) ready to be tested here: http://trac.wpwp.org/changeset/124/trunk?old_path=%2F&format=zip

Using WP v 2.3.3, Wassup v 1.5.1, standard wp-admin directory. Just downloaded from the plugin repository, unzipped it, uploaded it to the plugins folder and activated it.
The 1.5pre version you posted above does install successfully, then I upgraded it to v1.5.1 and it seems to be working fine. Just thought you'd like to know.

i have tried installing 1.5pre or 1.5 but nothing. it doesn't work

Your error can be fixed by deactivating WassUp, reload "plugins" admin menu again (re-click or refresh in browser), make sure that WassUp is deactivated, then activate WassUp again. The table, wp_wassup_tmp, is created only when WassUp is activated. If for some reason WassUp is not deactivated before an upgrade, this kind of error will occur.

I did that. I also removed the folder then reuploaded it... Same thing.
I will test this on a fresh install of wordpress 2.3.3. I did remove the tables and tried to start over fresh... same thing. But right now the tables are removed and Wassup is totally unistalled.
I think something is stopping wassup from writing the tables to the database.

You are right. Something is definitely affecting WassUp tables on your system.
In version 1.5, WassUp was updated to include character set/collation in tables for use in language translations. It is possible that your version of MySQL was compiled without character sets or there is some mismatch between the character set and collation that is causing the table creation to fail. The fix for this is straightforward. If you are familiar with PHP code or any programming language, you can try removing the charset/collation from the code yourself. In Wordpress admin menu, go to "Plugins"==>"Plugin editor", select "WassUp", find the "createTable()" function about half-way down the page, then comment out the lines:

$charset_collate = "DEFAULT CHARACTER SET $wpdb->charset";
if ( ! empty($wpdb->collate) )
$charset_collate .= " COLLATE $wpdb->collate";

Just add "/*" before the 1st line and "*/" after the last line (minus the quotes) to make these lines inactive. Update the file and then try activating WassUp again. Let me know if this fixes the problem. Thanks.
Great! Michele will probably add a workaround for this problem in WassUp's next update.
Unfortunately, your fix isn't applicable to the other "cannot redeclare" errors in this thread. For those, the solution may be not just deactivating WassUp plugin before updates, but removing the WassUp folder from the wp-content/plugins directory and reloading "plugins" admin menu screen in the browser to make sure WordPress removes WassUp from its cache, then installing the update.

My turn. I've installed, uninstalled, removed it from my SQL, deleted the directory, refreshed my plugin page to confirm, readded the directory, have commented out the code regarding the collation - and still get the same error

Works fine on one site I'm running it on - but a similar site - no go.. Any ideas?

Your error is a real puzzle. The function 'wassup_install' is only on line #48. It is NOT on line #49 of Wassup 1.5.1. There is no duplicate unless an old version is still activated. Deactivating WassUp and removing the directory of the old version should have removed WassUp completely from WordPress, unless there is some additional caching going on. I cannot solve this problem without more information from you such as:
There may also be a bug in WordPress 2.5.x plugin module related to the plugin cache. I reported a separate issue that I experienced with plugins not showing up in the plugin menu until 4 hours after an upgrade to WordPress 2.5.1 and when the number of plugins is >5

What version of Wassup did you upgrade from? Fresh install - no upgrade
What other plugins do you have running in Wordpress? Same as on my other site: Akismet, All in One SEO, Sitemap generator, DMSGuestbook, Global Translator, kPicasa Gallery, Maintenance Mode, Testing TinyMCE, TinyMCE Advanced, Wordpress.com stats, wp-cache (I disabled wp-cache before starting)
What version of PHP and MySQL are you running? MySQL 4.1.22, PHP 4.4.8
What version of Wordpress are you running? 2.5.1
Did you alter Wordpress in any way? No.

I can't duplicate your error on my system, so I need your help to try and isolate the problem. Please open Wassup.php in WordPress' plugin editor and cut these lines (#35-36) from the code, then paste them back in at the bottom of the program, just above the very last line with the "?>":
register_activation_hook(__FILE__, 'wassup_install'); register_deactivation_hook(__FILE__, 'wassup_uninstall');
Update the file then try activating wassup again. Let me know what happens, thanks.

Looks like there's an extra '}' - I doubt it really refers to line 129 - maybe I'm wrong..

Hmmm. That error should not have occured. Something must have gone wrong during the edit. Please try again, but on a new copy of WassUp this time (delete the modified version from your plugins directory).
In case I was not clear before, here are the instructions again:
Open Wassup.php in WordPress' plugin editor and, on line #45, above the line "function wassup_install() {" function, add the "if" part of the "!function_exists" test on a new line: "if (!function_exists("wassup_install")):". Then on line #130 (or 131), below the line "} //#end function wassup_install", add the "endif;" part of the "(!function_exists)" test on a new line. Here is what it would look like with the middle part of the "wassup_install" function omitted for brevity:

Thanks for doing the tests. Your last error report was actually very helpful. I believe it pinpointed the problem as Wordpress' "register_activation"/"register_deactivation" hooks in Wassup. My next request to you would have been to put a "if (!function_exists("wassup_uninstall")):" and "endif;" test around the "wassup_uninstall" function on lines #137-149 and see if that fixes the problem.
Ouch! Back to the drawing board. Thanks again for your valuable help. The next step is to test WassUp with all your plugins, one-by-one, on a server similarly configured as yours. Since my system runs PHP5, not PHP4, I need Michele's help with this. We'll keep working to find the cause and a fix.
